If you want to get away from the bustling surroundings of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and enjoy the tranquility of nature, Seethawaka Botanical Garden is the perfect place for you. Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Garden is one of the five botanic gardens in Sri Lanka, located in Avissawella. The other four botanical gardens in the country are Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Hakgala Botanic Gardens, Mirijjawila Botanic Gardens, and Henarathgoda Botanic Gardens. The Seethawaka Botanical Garden is the youngest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. The park was opened to the public in late 2014. The Seethawaka Botanic Garden is located in the village of Ilukovita, near Avissawella, on the Puwakpitiya-Thummodara main road. The total area of ​​the Botanic Garden is about 105 acres.

The main objective of starting the garden was to establish a Surukum (Exotic Plant Protection) Center for future generations to conserve the flora of the challenging low country wet zone plants. In addition, the park serves as an eco-tourism hub, an example of the region’s economic growth and wet zone landscape improvement. This also serves as a hub for the public to see long-standing and underutilized plants, to grow the herbal industry, and to provide education and training in botany and floriculture in the wet zone.

The park is also home to several special ecological zones. Among them are divided into different zones known as follows,

  • The Garden of Tops
  • Kumbuka
  • Tree Garden
  • Collection of Palm Trees

The upper section of the Seethawaka Botanical Garden is reserved to allow you to walk two or three kilometers through a natural forest to find out what the characteristics of the wet zone forests are. You will be able to walk through the forested area through well-paved lanes. If you come early in the morning you can watch the birds too. Also, the shade of the Kumbuka tree, located beside the garden’s water pond, will certainly ease your fatigue. So if you are looking for a place to relax for the weekend, then this park will be your go-to place for you. It is also a great place to photograph weddings. You can also take a bath in the nearby Ranmudu Falls.


When you step out of the lounge, you can see swan boats in the small tanks that are frequented by tourists. When you enter the Botanical Gardens, you will find beautiful floral areas. Enjoy the freedom of sightseeing of the park, the endangered garden, the threatened plant collection, the central grassland, the tea plantation tree garden, the tops, the herbal garden, the rose garden. The Botanic Garden is located near the Indikadamukalana Forest Reserve. This is like a garden that is full of plants. Upon reaching the tops of the garden, you will find a medicinal garden and a rose garden. The Rose Garden, which is a bouquet of roses in different colors and shapes, adds to the beauty to the Seethawaka Botanical Garden.


The park is open 365 days of the year and is open to you every day from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Getting a ticket from the counter at the entrance to the park, you can spend the rest of the day enjoying the greenery of the trees. As you enter through the main entrance, you will find a viewpoint, a guest house, and a restaurant. Also, sanitary facilities are available here. There is no contamination here as it is very well maintained. The sanitary facilities, however, are of the highest quality. According to the rules, it is not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages or musical instruments into the park.
